Chick Pea is closing its doors...

Dear everyone,

Good bye!

After five wonderful years in Metro Vancouver, it's finally time for Chick Pea to close it's doors, at least for a while. From Commercial and The Drive, to Front Street in New West, we have been so fortunate to have meet inspiring families who have stayed true to the vision of Chick Pea from the beginning.

These moms and dads (you know who you are!) have become friends, we've watched babies grow from soft little bundles into kindergardeners, and we have all cherished the time we've spent with them.

A huge thanks to all of you for your great support. It's because of family that Chick Pea is closing now. I'm due in 2 weeks now with our first little baby boy, and as we all discover, family definitely comes first and I want these precious little people in my life to get all of the time and attention they deserve.

Chick Pea may be closing its doors...and rather quickly...but we're not gone.

There's always Chick Pea in Ottawa you can visit for an East Coast fix (who doesn't love our capital city!?!), and I imagine there will be an interesting way for us to continue bringing you new and wonderful products and ideas in the future.

Please come out an support us to the end - and pick up some great steals! - at our closing sale which starts right now. I deliver this little bundle on September 17th so we're doing our best to close up by September 15th!!!!

I used to wonder why parks were such a big deal. Now I know - we are officially a park-loving family and get super excited with new places to find and sprinklers to run through!

This shot is from Rocky Point in Port Moody which has such a great water park and that 'je ne sais quoi' factor. There are always lots of famlies and kids and great vibes there. Our latest favorite is to play ball in the splash zones - all suited up for the occasion of course!

I love a great deal - and July is the perfect time if you're a parent. If you're like me and an immediate gratification person - you can find steals in your current size and wear it out all summer long. And if you're like the people i admire and think forward - you can buy your favorites in a size larger and look forward to wearing it all summer!

I'd love to be that kind of person. Maybe I'll try it. With a little boy arriving in September I have my 0-3 basics tucked away but nothing looking out to next summer. Oh boy. Not sure how i'm going to pull this whole growing family thing off!!!!

Somthing new...sewing!

I really didn't think sewing would be super fun but I was pretty disappointed when I started searching for new crib linens and came up short. There are simply not a lot of great designs out there. So i learned how to do a simple sewing project and i think this will end up being a play mat. I filled it up with bamboo batting so it's nice and cushy and natural - and used this printed zoo style fabric to add a little fun to a new little boy's day!!!

Wanted to share the latest projects with you all...maybe I should start looking at some custom blankets or play mats for the store....hmmmm....love your thoughts!

New hats! Nothing gets me more excited about summer than the weekend that you finally need to think about a hat. It's the recipe for water parks, ball games, car washing, and lazy pool time - basically your perfect summer!

These new Kangols just arrived and my test team is already coming back with great comments. I can't get the navy gingham cap off Addie - she likes it for the car especially. Knit Night in June

I am totally re-inspired on knitting these days and it's pictures like this crazy guy skull sweater that heat me up to improve my skill set! So of course I'm knitting a precious little blue sleep sack with ears for the new baby boy. But one day I'll make a skull sweater like this (wouldn't a 2-year old size be amazing!?!).

Here's how it works: If you're working on a project (we have two enthusiasts dying to learn how to add the band to the sweater for instance) book to come in at 6:30 for some special attention and more advanced learning. Stay for the evening and get help as you go - our beginners class will join at 7:30 and the whole group will wrap up around 9:30pm. We always have at least 2 teachers to make sure you get the help you need whether you're just learning or tackling a more advanced project.

Everyone gets 10% off any clothing purchases that night - and beginners can tackle either the Striped Hat or the Baby Duvet! Ask about our Knit Kits when you call to register!!!

Meet Trina!

Who loves Trina? I do! And I especially love this photo of her. For me Trina naturally embodies everything that I believe Chick Pea is all about - she's full of love, finds pleasure and purpose in helping others, has amazing style, a kind word for everyone, and brings a sense of peace and serenity to those around her. Most of all - she's authentic.

There is nothing made up about her and I think that's why she is such an asset to the store. When she tells you something is fantastic and everyone is raving about it - it's the absolute truth. And if the size you picked is too small, she'll tell you that too.

We are so lucky to have her as our Store Manager and resident stylist. I love the calls at the end of the day when she tells me about a wonderful mom came in - where Trina really went the extra mile and pulled all of the sizes for the kids and played with the babies and chatted about development and really made a friend - and we forget completely to talk about money. That's the best part of owning a store.

So a huge thanks to Trina for jumping in and taking on the post of Store Manager!!! We are all so lucky to have you in our lives!!!

Lexi the little charmer

I had to share these little shots of Lexi from our summer photo shoot! Maybe it's the impish grin, or the way she shook her ponies with pride - but this little thing had so much fun i laugh every time i think back to it. She picked out her own outfits and got to model them streetside - what a thrill and such a neat way to build confidence!

Of course I love this apron dress too, it's so precious and practical with the leggings, but it's Lexi's little happy moments that really shine through!

Now only if we could keep our kids this happy all the time....

Belly Jelly and Nappy Ointment is back!

This is a summer must have - definitely test it when you drop in! The whole line is natural, made in Canada, with no parabens, preservatives or other bad stuff. Plus it's loaded with sweet natural ingredients to keep us at our best.

Cielo - Introducing a new Vancouver designer

The concept of the 100-mile diet can apply to just about any part of our life - and Cielo, my favorite new line this season - makes it easy.

We mixed a Japanese vintage cotton print with organic bamboo and cottons to create this devine collection. There are three dresses and a legging to mix and match - and they're perfect with these charcoal Tip Toey Joeys. They are also great value, made in Vancouver, and the collection has a unique west coast flavor.

Huggles and Snuggles

Just arrived from the breeders....these snuggly dogs and bunnies and lambs and monkeys are ready to find new homes! The truffles dogs (above) lie flat - think bear skin rug - and are absolute magnets for little ones. The bashful bunnies (below) and their farm friends are as soft as a long haired chihuahua (not that i'm biased) and will melt your heart.

Puddle Jumps and Spring Crushes

Meet Justin (Justi) the cute boy next door and Addie's first crush. These two jump up and down and scream each others names, sneak through the hedge and knock on each other's back doors, and race their cars around the 'hood - and are not quite 2 yet!

Somehow the his and hers boots really work for these two - puddles and all! And poor Xander was quite the sport keeping an eye on the two of them!

These are some of the colors in the Katvig spring and summer collection - a mix of solids, stripes and apples - in blues, greens, and the red and purple. The spring jacket is a must - zip out lining, reflector strips, and a hood that really works! Addie is actually not in many photos in this shoot because we had a bit of a tantrum when i wanted to take the boots off her....

The summer rompers are adorable for 0-24 months and the dresses, leggings, boys, shirts, tanks, and boxers go from 2-6!

Drop in and feel the quality of this amazing cotton - addie is still wearing pieces from September last year - and not one color has faded or one stripe bled in the wash. These are pieces that look great and last.

Cool plaids and sweet blooms

A new look for Dora?

From preschool to middle school....oh my.

With Addie almost at 2 I'm finally becoming part of the "Dora World". I have to admit, that Dora, along with Barney was once on my 'never' ever list but it changed when I realized the educational value of the show. So we are slowly becoming fans.

And now...sexy Dora? I'm not sure I'm ready for this! Sure we dance to Lady Gaga around the house but I'm still undecided on Barbie and now we have to make a call on the 'new' look for Dora that will come out next fall. They're trying to cash in on the tween market by having her grow up - but what does that mean for the preschoolers?

It's Baby Time

So I have a little announcement to make - it's officially baby time at Chick Pea - and maybe this will explain why we have brought in so many newborn and baby clothes this spring. I'm expecting in September and am officially 3 months along!

It's so exciting to be here and be having another baby. I have a better sense of what to expect, and all of the things I have yet to learn you are teaching me! I have become a sponge for knowledge on how to manage life with two (or more!) little ankle biters.

And for those of you who already know and love Petit Bateau - it's back! More posts to come, but in the meantime let's get busy making some cute little babies to fit into these little onesies!

Imps & Elfs for our little ones

Julia, the designer and new mom behind Lola & Lucas, came in to see the new Imps & Elfs collection and I loved her story. She is a die hard fan, and mentioned that it was one of the lines that inspired her to create her own company. She searches it out every year on her travels to New York and Europe. I love that we're on the same wave length!

The baby line (3-12 months) is a mix and match collection of the softest cottons and natural fibres you'll find. The fact that it's organic doesn't hurt, and responsibly made is even better. Spring for Layers

Layering is a great way to pull our kids clothes through several seasons. Mix in a few new pieces and you've got something fresh and fun. I was inspired today after a little walk along the river, and came back and played with some of the ways you could put it together. We have some great pieces on sale (up to 50% off) and spring arrivals to mix in.

Hi everyone. Sorry for the long delay in blog posting! I love writing, and sharing ideas, and chatting about our kids, and great new stuff, and hearing your comments - I miss it! - but it has been a challenging time personally and I have been focusing inwards to get through this stretch.

I was really sad when Sarah decided to leave Chick Pea so suddenly last year. I love her dearly and wish her well in all her future endeavors - and cherish the time we did get to work together.

I'm now solo and excited to set a course for growth at the shop, keeping the same spirit and heart that has defined Chick Pea and made it such a special haven. There's nothing better than a new mom chatting away about her new little one, excited grandmas and nanas finding the perfect little gift, and sharing in the growth and development of all our families.

So - I want to send out a huge welcome to everyone and encourage you to drop in to see some of the great new (and favorite!) lines in the store this spring. Trina Schoenit and her mom Cindy have become a huge part of the shop, and I want to congratulate Trina in taking on a role as Store Manager this last week. She has such a warm and loving spirit - and a sense for style that I adore - if you haven't met her already! Trina is in Thursday-Saturday and Cindy is here on Mondays and Wednesdays. I'm in the store on Tuesdays.

A Perfect Little Hat

It's been three weeks of snow snow snow and so I have to say I'm glad we had a couple of extra warm hats for all of the sledding and general mucking about that's beeing going on. This is a variation on our little stripe hat - beginners knitting class - and it's definitely a favorite with Addie. This is a great way to use up some extra yarn and an excellent pattern to let your creativity loose on!

We have a beginners knitting hat class, a little stripe sweater class, and a baby duvet class all coming up in January. Send me a note and reserve a spot! (Class fee is $10).

Happy Hollydays

Today was simply beautiful, and reminds me what a wonderful community can be created around a store! With deep soft snow everywhere, a few people decided to brave the chill air and head outside. All of our customers today came in on foot, spent a few peaceful moments on the sofa, browsed for some special little gifts, and when I closed it was with a sense of peace that all was well in the world. I hope you feel the same way!

It inspired me to finally post some of my personal favorite 'moments' from the Santa photo shoot on our website.

Kangol for Kids

I've been getting a hard time (in store - not here in comments - you guys are too nice!) for long posts. So here's a short one! Kangol winter hats have arrived. And they are great.

I love the classic tan wool - but the bumble stripe has enough energy to make an old sweatshirt look good. Historically British and urban appropriate. Hard to go wrong!

The season of giving and it all started with Santa...

So I have only one thing to say - WOW - what an amazing group of parents came out for some Chick Pea holiday style and showed their support for Free The Children.

More than twenty families spent a few precious moments with Santa last week, and between the hugs, and shrugs, and looks of awe, and fear (i have to be honest!) every child had their moment.

I love the simple and fresh photography from Revival Arts Studio, and the way it contrasts with the old world velvety Santa. So sweet and classic. I cannot even pick one as a favorite - I ended up posting this one from my short list of about 12!

As a special thank you to all of the Chick Pea families, Marc Kielburger at Free The Children has sent a copy of their illustrated book for kids - It Takes A Child - to pick up along with your 5x7 photo. It tells the story of Craig, who started the charity to end child labour, when he was 12. It's a heavy topic for young minds, but what better time to start teaching about social responsibility than the very beginning?

So now the biggest job of all - deciding where to put our $400+ in donations to good work! At Free The Children we can allocate it to any number of their Adopt a Village programs. We can give 8 goats - or a 6-month lunch program to an entire primary school! I think I'll leave it to the people on the ground in Kenya to decide where it will help the children the most.

A huge thank you to all of the families and the precious little ones who joined us for the festivities!

We held our first "Tiny Sweater" class recently and we showed everyone the sweater sample in the state of lovely chaos before it's all put together. Well - here's the reveal! A little motivation to keep working at it! It really does turn out like this...

This is the tiniest size (3-6m0) from Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino 2 and goes up to 24mo. It really is a pretty simple job to knit it, once you learn a few tricks. Pick up the classic natural shell buttons (shown here) anytime, we have lots in stock and they look fabulous with every shade (75 cents each).

Revival Arts Studio will be in house to do mini-sessions for your kids, about 10 minutes long. Just enough time to keep the kids focused while we snap away to capture a traditional shot with Santa, and add some extra frames of just your kids you can preview in an online gallery later.

AS I WAS BRAINSTORMING CONSTANTLY KOBYS DAD WAS EATING A SALAD THAT HAD CHICK PEAS IN IT AND THE REST IS HISTORY...............I MARCHED DOWN THE NEXT DAY AND REGISTERED THE NAME "CHICK PEA CHILDREN'S BOUTIQUE".

3 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE RUNNING STORES FOR KOOKOO DESIGNS AND A SHORT BUSINESS COURSE LATER...............AND THE PERFECT SPOT WAS FOUND. A QUAINT SPACE OF 600 SQ. KNOWING THESE SMALL DETAILS WAS ENOUGH TO CONVINCE ME, EVEN THOUGH MY BEST FRIEND ANGIE WAS HOLDING MY HAND TELLING ME I WAS ABSOLUTELY CRAZY!

6 WEEKS OF WORK, IT TOOK ME AND MY DAD 3 WEEKS TO CHIP AWAY AT THE BRICK. ADD 3 MORE WORKMEN TO THE MIX TO BUILD THE MOULDINGS AND DO REPAIRS AND THROUGH THIS PROCESS A BEAUTIFUL NEW CHICK PEA WAS BORN.

IT HAS BEEN THE MOST INTERESTING TIME OF MY LIFE. THE PAST ALMOST 5 YEARS HAVE BROUGHT SO MUCH LAUGHTER, A FEW TEARS, MANY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDSHIPS AND MY SON HAS GROWN FROM A TODDLING BABY TO AN ALMOST 6 YEAR OLD BOY. I HAVE REACHED A POINT WHERE LIFE IS PULLING ME IN NEW DIRECTIONS..........IN THIS CHICK PEA HAS FOUND A WONDERFUL NEW OWNER. SOMEONE TO LOVE AND NURTURE AND GROW THE BUSINESS.

I always find that the most simple of toys are the ones that withstand the test of time. Wooden blocks at age 2 can be piled high and knocked down, at age 3 they start to build simple castles with them, at age 4 they start to learn the alphabet and start reciting what the letters and images are, at age 5 they begin to create words with them and build bigger towers only to be knocked down and a new game or pattern begun again. I have found that so many of the plastic toys that light up and make sounds and do fancy things are the ones that Koby never touches again after a few times of play. Where as the ones that have stuck around for more than 4 years now and are still as solid as they were are the ones made from wood that requires them to use their imagination..................I feel so much happier about investing in a toy that will be used time and time again, enjoyed in so many different ways that can be passed down again and again to other little ones in our life.

Play and learn..........the perfect title for a perfect book. This is my favorite in Chick Pea as it is ideal for a child Kobys age(5).

Koby has many of the same habits I had at age 5. I have so many memories of myself at his age. I am in my bedroom sitting in the middle of my room and around me is a perfect circle of "friends". These friends are my treasured little ponies, my doll named Nalley(I named her after my favorite salad dressing), and a few g.i. joes(given that I had an older brother this made perfect sense.) I can feel the sun shining warmly on me through my 2 big windows and I am soooooooooo very happy. I loved being on my own in my room. Coloring and Drawing for hours. Koby is the very same. I actually get teary eyed watching him as I am so happy that he can be so content on his own. He doesn't need me or anyone else to entertain him, just his imagination. This to me is such a gift. He was such a busy busy bee as a toddler that it is hard to believe at times just how fast he has grown up. We get home from school and he goes straight to his room to find his books and pens. He gets under his covers in his bed. Surrounds himself with all of his friends(transformers, cars, stuffed animals) and draws until bedtime.

The new Giant Play and Learn Book is his favorite. Filled with tons to get the imagination soaring...........sketches partly done, stickers, doodles, etc.....If you have any little person aged 4 to 7 in your family I would definitely recommend this book!

This photo is one of my favorites of Koby. Amazing that this was 2 years ago already. Everyone always told me that boys will fall in love with Superheroes no matter how much you are convinced that they won't go through that stage. And wow were my friends right! At age 3 the Superman obsession begun. He loved this costume so much he would wear it during the day and sleep in it at night. The hardest part was convincing him to allow me to wash it! Then at age 4 it was Spiderman. Koby and I used to go for a dinner date every Thursday night and his special date outfit was his Spiderman mask and web making gloves. Sitting across from him chatting about his day while he was sweating under his mask and trying to pick up his grilled cheese sandwich while wearing those huge gloves always gave me a good amount of laughs. This year at age 5 Batman has become the new focus. On his 5th birthday I had hopes of what he would wear to his party but the Batman costume was Kobys vote. And now that Halloween is just a few days away Batman will be who I am trick or treating with. I can only imagine what next year will bring!

Ants, kangaroos, and tigers...

I recently learned that kids can memorize words really early - as young as 12 months - by associating them with a picture. It's a different way to teach our kids than the traditional "A" is for "apple" which works when they're a little older (like 5 or 6).

So I'm testing it out - and so far Addie loves these flashcards - and definitely recognizes the animals (although no words yet). We pull them out when she's eating in her chair and essentially distract her from throwing food to the dog. I highly recommend these - very unisex designs - and beautiful patterns and artwork we can all enjoy.

Julie actually emailed and just said "Hi Kim, I love knitting! What's next?". So here's what's up in Debbie Bliss for fall (and a little ways into the New Year)...

CLASSES

November 13 Tiny Sweaters*

Learn to knit a striped sweater (sizes 0-24 months). We're starting with the little striped cardigan pictured above - a classic vneck shape that you can customize in any color you choose! You'll need to know the basic stitches (and ideally have taken the hat class first).

November 20 Open Knit Night

Open to anyone who knows the basics and is working on a project and would like support, help, and company (tiny sweater learners plan on this night as a follow up!)

December 11 Learn to Knit a Striped Hat*

Learn the basics and how to knit a striped hat (beginner, 0-24 months) and Open Knit Night together in one class for holiday enthusiasts - some learners have done 2 hats in the week following the class!!!

January 20 Baby Duvet*

Learn to knit a baby duvet in Cashmerino Aran. Aran is a heavier weight than the cashmerino we use for the hat and sweater projects - and perfect for a long, cozy, pinstriped blanket with a duvet style air pocket in the middle. This is an alternate class to learn the basics or get a refresher if you've done the hat!

January 27 Learn to Knit a Striped Hat*

He is the silliest, happiest, fun, little guy.........always shrieking, giggling, and getting into just about everything that he can. My brother took this photo after searching the house and finding him inside of the dryer! Any parent of a little boy knows that they are the busiest creatures around, always getting into mischief!

Library Camouflage and Outpatient Togs

I have blogged about books before - so you know we have an addiction - and we decided to drink our fill today at the Port Moody Library. I'm always curious to see what Addie will pick out (this week was a sushi board book - yay! good taste points!). It was 2 degrees when we set out so i bundled Addie up in the new organic cotton Velour Katvig stripes. Little did i know it would be library camouflage! As she ran down the aisles she fit in like a Cheetah on the Savannah.

Little did i know we'd be in the emergency room an hour later. We went home, had a great lunch of fresh crunchy Italian bread and Tuscan ham, and then fully fueled up she proceeded to dive head first into my (gorgeous but completely child inappropriate) white leather barcelona chair. Of course the safety devices on the corners had been removed by little fingers five minutes before the accident and now i feel like i deserve the terrible mom of the year award.

So this is where we ended up. and i have to say, for outpatient gear, this little suit held up and did its job. And camouflaged the blood quite well. Alls well - a little crazy glue was all it took to shore up that little scalp wound - and I'm thankful we don't have to shave her head for Thanksgiving. I've waited long enough for the hair we've got!!!

I think she earned her stripes today.

Can James possibly be any happier!!!!!!!!! Dancing in the store is part of his Friday ritual. James, Mackenzie and mom Ally often come for Friday morning visits and James looks at me with that silly sweet smile as he races around the store making his baby sister Mackenzie giggle.

Two and a bit..........reminds me just how busy, busy Koby was at that age. They really only stop to take a few good breaths and then they run and run and run..........until they run into something and hurt themselves and then maybe they stop again for a quick hug.

Books to Raise a Reader Right!

How do I say this...new books, new books, new books, NEW BOOKS! Cracking open a new book - especially a new fabulous book with a great cover - gives me almost a spiritual lift. And now that my daughter is reading (upside down but I think it still counts), opening a new children's book gives me almost the same high. Except better. Because I can see that same glimmer of excitement in her eyes.

So again - new books, new books, new books! We have new books. Lots of new books. Great stories. Fun books. Activity books. Monster books. And sweet books. Books for every taste. Introducing Revival Arts Studio

Darcie and Jason are miracle workers. With a 9-day old baby (and a mother who forgot diapers!) they managed to snap some incredibly memorable pictures, soothe the mom, rock the baby into a state of calm, feed their own two kids, and change the set about 9 times. In an hour.

So when it came time to partner with brilliant talent to help translate the essence of our newest baby - Chick Pea - into visual art of course we turned again to Revival Arts Studio. I have actually left the site open for the last half hour just to listen to their tunes. Excellent taste all round from these two!

You'll see some great new shots at the Apple Festival in the store on Sunday (or if you're tricky you'll preview the new Come play with me... photo story on our home page!).

Chick Pea Babies and Friendships

Lovely baby Aiden is a regular in Chick Pea. His gorgeous mom Melissa is one of my dearest friends and I am so very lucky to get my hands on him etleast once a week! Melissa and Aiden often settle themselves on the Chick Pea couch and snuggle in while we have a great chat and catch up. Our couch has become home to many when they come and visit. It seems to evoke great laughter, stories of marriages and relationships, babies nursing/feeding/changing, at times tears are shared, lots of hugs and great bonding!........This couch has become what my grandmas dining room table was. I always thought if that table could speak it would have so many stories to share and that is how I feel with our couch. On many a days lots of women sitting around sharing stories, drinking coffees while the kids are playing in the play area. I cherish these times and am so thankful for the wonderful people that have come into my life through Chick Pea......

Nature-friendly fibres are the word of the day, and Vancouver-based Lola and Lucas has their thumb on the pulse of this new direction in childrens wear. The collection features soy, bamboo, organic cotton, and coconut as key materials cut into soft, cozy and stylish shapes for kids.

We sold out of spring's Lola and Lucas quickly - ordered double for fall - and they're walking out the door on tiny feet from zero up to 24 months! Of course we have the classic kimono jogging suit in creme and black, pink and grey mix and match leggings and long sleeves, the must have romper (which I credit with Addie's casting in a Fisher Price commercial!), and this new shape - the tunic and legging in wheat and clay grey.

We're also expecting a little olive coat with the coconut buttons! Can you tell i'm excited!?!?

All in all - we are in love with the Lola and Lucas basics!

Knit Night: Too Sweet for Sweets

Ten moms, a weekday evening, and shopping - we thought a plate of strawberry meringue sweets would be gone in seconds. But our newbie knitters were focused and fell under the knitting spell. We were left with the plate - and ten little striped hats in the works!

Some of our favorite knitter-selected colour combos:

- heather grey and chocolate

- lilac and white

- classic blush pink or sky blue with chocolate

- denim and grey

- red and pink (my latest project)

Our stellar teachers Donna Mathewes and Marina Porcelatto showed us how to cast on, knit, and purl. All in all - the knitters showed incredible skill and picked up the basics, and we have a huge thank you to everyone for coming! It was a wonderful night sharing colors, ideas, and stories. One of the knitters even taught the teachers a new trick - the Korean style of casting on (which was pretty much agreed to be fabulous - quick and painless!).

For future knitting classes, we will be hosting an Open Knit Night once a month where anyone who knows the basics can bring their projects to gather and get some help (an excellent way to stay on track and finish up the hats!). We'll also be offering new projects through Chick Pea - like a fabulous "Love You" blanket and little buttoned sweater.

We'll also have periodic beginners classes for newbies - Learn to Knit Night - to get you up to speed!

I may never be seen wearing my hair without one of these again! Most moms with a toddler probably agree - dirt just becomes part of life! I'm learning that the most important thing for Addie is to explore the world and build her confidence. Which means clean comes in at a distant second!

But that doesn't mean boring clothes! So far for me Sophie Catalou fall is wearing really well. I learned first hand today after she insisted on crawling through an entire antique store on her own, and i think this little plum velvet jacket makes a pair of summer pants transition reall well into fall. It's a nice alternative to a sweater and washes really well.

So far, i'm a fan! Next - we'll stress test the knit dress!!!

Something happens for me at the end of August...the leaves start to blow around, the evenings cool off, and I start hoarding saturated colors, soft fibres, and look forward to new hats, scarves, bags, and shoes. Cozy, safe, and comforting.

And now that i have a baby i can start snuggling her in them too! Although 14 months isn't really a baby anymore, is it?

So the only question is - what's your color? This week I love the saturated plum and olive. The boho grey and teal. And the crisp celery and raspberry. Each one of these hand knit creations is crocheted in multiple colors with a contrast band by a wonderful woman from Japan. Really, you can't go wrong (and they keep little wet rain sprinkles away from our little ones previous little heads!) :)

I have to tell you about this wonderful customer that came in this spring. She is eagerly awaiting the arrival of twin boys (grand children!) in the fall and wanted to pick up some special treats for her daugher. In my opinion every expecting mom needs a mom like this.

She picked up two matching tiny (special small newborn size) blue west coast baby kimono nighties, with matching blue hats and chocolate brown super stretchy cocoon blankets so they could come home from the hospital in comfort and style. I am so excited for these babies. What a wonderful and caring and excited family to be getting ready for them!!!

She also tracked down a tub of creme for mom to help with her growing belly (and keep her skin soft and feeling great) and some extra little treats for the new members of the family. So of course i have to dig out my old picture of Addie at 9 days old in her pink outfit to reminisce!

For my 5 year old boy life is absolutely perfect when we have no schedule.........no deadlines.......no agenda. Koby has to be one of the most adaptable little people. His life is constantly on the go. Each morning that he wakes up one of the first things that he says to me is "what is today?" This means, where is he going..............moms house, dads house, summer camp, working with mom, grandparents.............he is loved by so many wonderful people that his schedule is forever go,go,go. As much as he loves the variety I have to say his favorite time is the days that we can spend at the beach with no timeline of leaving. Hours in the sunshine, playing in the water, building sandcastles, snacking on as many popsicles as he possibly can and best of all playing in the wet, wet, sand.
I have to say as much as the age of 5 can be challenging at moments I feel like every day I want to hold on to him just a little bit tighter and smother him in kisses as long as he will let me.

He is by far the most precious............Aiden Lane Reimer was born July.17th weighing in at 7lbs 13oz. He was born to the nicest of mamas........our dear friend Melissa.
Rustyn, Koby and I went for a visit yesterday afternoon and Melissa is absolutely glowing. Her and her husband Justin have just fallen in love with their little man. And I have to say being the emotional girl that I am, I cried and I cried when I saw Melissa holding her gorgeous son. And when I held him and felt his tiny little hands I did not want to let go!

So Julie at Lolo + Sprout (a local mom and graphic designer) is on my list for the most creative and visually talented people ever! This is one of her standard card designs with the bouquet (in pink or blue) and the hand applied crystal detail in the flowers. I love her attention to the small things too like creamy gorgeous quality paper stock and the rounded edge corners. Each card is hand made.

Anyway my point is - somehow i talked her into doing a special favor and she did custom invitations for my sister's wedding shower last may (Congratulations Brooke! She's now married with a very well stocked kitchen thanks to the wonderful generosity of our guests). These are so fabulous i want to show you the end result - using one of my favorite fonts for her name (Jane Austin).

My wonderful and super talented friend Mel moved to Ontario two years ago and i miss her dearly. The upside to the long distance that separates us is the guilt - she is a wonderful photographer and makes sure to send us photo diaries of life in Burlington!

In fact, when she moved another of our wonderful friends moved at the same time, and this beautiful shot is a moment in time of their two gorgeous kids (one family with all boys and the other with all girls!) enjoying an ice cream. I sent them the Chick Pea baseball shirts for playtime and am so happy to see them playing (and looking adorable too!).

Dogs in Store

I am a dog person. I have yet to meet a dog i don't love. In fact, I fell in love with Ginger (a Rotweiler) in Quebec and was so enamoured we visited a Chihuahua breeder in Montreal the same week and adopted Domino. He was only four days old (and about four inches long!) and I actually had to fly back 2 months later to pick him up but that's another blog post!!!

We're now training him to be a store dog and learn some retail manners. So if you are a dog lover (and think it's funny that he hides in the floor-level compartments of the store armoires!) bring your baby in (human or canine or one under each arm!) and say hello. We'll be in most Thursdays (although not the second half of july).

Baby Knit Night Starts Thusday Sept 11! Sign Up Now!

It feels wonderful to create clothes for your baby and child. Maybe it's the 'gatherer' in me - but there is nothing more wonderful than the feeling that in case of world disaster i could raise a sheep and use the wool to clothe my family. Okay - a little far out and romantic maybe - but the feeling is a good one!

I knit this up out of our Baby Cashmerino line from Debbie Bliss in the UK - it's so simple to do - and a really fun easy project. And there are some amazing colors - i think i might try pink and yellow next.

And old ladies have probably told you know relaxing knitting can be when you get into a rhythm. And it is! The pace of your needles naturally follows the beat of your heart and relaxes you from the inside out. And what new (or expecting!) mom doesn't need that?

Summer has definitely arrived - and as a first time baby owner - I'm learning fast and furiously how to protect that soft white yummy delicious baby skin!!!!

Don't forget to pick up a sun hat (i never thought i would be a mom who would agree to put a floppy ol' thing on my baby but they work and Addie loves the shade on her eyes!!!) and of course your sun screen (natural or otherwise) and to find shady spots...and as you can see we are also big believers in spray parks!

There are many hours of fun to be had at Rocky Point Park and if you have a pooch don't forget to try the doggie ice cream as a treat for them too (Addie had strawberry but i think wanted to try the crunchy dog treat bits mixed into Domino's!!!). Okay rambling now....enjoy the heat!!!

Nothing is more beautiful to me than the sight of my very special friend Devon. This girl is one of my oldest friends. Living in different cities we rarely see one another but it is one of those special friendships that we can absolutely pick up where we last left off. I went for a visit this past weekend as dear Devon is on bedrest and has been for the past 5 weeks. She is now close to 33 weeks and is very patiently keeping herself busied on her couch until her baby boy Lyric decides that he is ready to arrive. Not able to make it to Chick Pea I brought a bag of items and we had a shopping trip in the living room!
Let me tell you she is absolutely glowing. Just gorgeous and radiating happiness. These two are going to be the most wonderful of parents. Their love for each other is impossible to ignore, just look at the way Dustin is looking at Dev in the photo! I couldn't be more proud of the couple that they are and am looking so forward to sharing in their journey of parenthood.

So we think that line is pretty cute! And so is the latest collection from Petit Bateau! Sweet florals with lace edging and pink little floral bursts for the girls (onesies with skirts are irresistible for the hot summer months ahead!), these great gift boxes for new moms with baby basics (in pink and blue of course!), and these:

This took me at least a week to realize (although Sarah being quite smart figured it out pretty quickly!) but the size you choose - like this one in the photo for 6 months - is the number on the front! There's also a 3 and a 12 and an 18.... really puts me to shame :)

They wash beautifully and are made of the softest cottons and look great the entire time your babies wear them. Unlike the 'pack model' for onesies I have never found a snap pulls off or a seam skews (and i'm picky about these things!).

Kobys 5th birthday

I am happy to say that Kobys birthday was an absolute great day. Holding the party at the restaurant Timbre was perfect.(check out www.timbrerestaurant.com as it is a great place to go relax, listen to live music, and eat delicious food and they are kid friendly too.....you have to try their nutella banana french toast, it is my favorite)
The kids entertained themselves by being the silly little monkeys that they are;they ate, opened presents and had a whole lot of transformer cake.
Here is Koby sipping his apple juice at the end of the party visiting with his uncle Ryan and yes, those are batman pyjamas that he is wearing. He insisted on wearing them over his clothes and he looked so darn cute how could I say no!

Koby turns 5 years old!!!!!!!!!!!

What every parent asks themselves...........where has the time gone???? My once baby boy is turning 5 in two days. No longer do I have a little baby or a crazy toddler but a sweet, loving, fun, kind beautiful little guy who I can happily say still loves to kiss and cuddle and go on dinner dates with his mom! His sensitive spirit is truly inspiring.
We are having his birthday party this weekend in a friends restaurant on Commercial Drive and we are lucky enough to have the restaurant to ourselves but I am trying to come up with some fun ideas to keep the kids busy...........any ideas out there please drop me a note.

Glass bottles are the best

I'm surviving on one glass bottle for my 9-month old and eagerly awaiting the arrival of our new glass bottles! So - as you can imagine I'm at the sink 4 or 5 times a day washing it - but it will be worth the wait! Here's what I love about the new bottles:

- Safe and cleaner than plastic
- They're cute! With no annoying characters!
- Microwave safe and dishwasher friendly
- Hypo allergenic
- The silicone sleeve keeps the outside of the bottle cool

They're definitely a new Chick Pea basic! Hope you like them too. We're bringing in more and more safe and healthy choices for you and your babies!

The 9lb SilverCross Micro spells Freedom!

I love my Bugaboo stroller, my babysitter does not. Part of the problem is it won't fit in her Mini Cooper. So - I brought home a pink Silver Cross Micro - and they were off to the races!

It's pretty amazing - she can hold Addie in one arm, fold it up, and pop it on over her shoulder with the strap. Seems simple, but in the world of babies, this spells Freedom! So much easier to hop out of the car and bring her along for a quick errand.

Sarah recommended it and the motion is officially seconded! Great for babies, and moms, and babysitters :)

Summer Sun.......

I cannot wait for the Summer. I am sitting in Chick Pea watching the snow fall and I am dreaming of being somewhere warm. This is a photo of Koby from last summer when we took him camping. He would spend hours down by the water throwing rocks in the water and exploring for treasure. Absolutely nothing makes me happier than when he is amused by the simple beautiful things that nature has to offer.
Within these past 5 minutes the snow has stopped and the sun is peaking out........beautiful.
For those who still need to bundle their little ones during these cold days the Lola and Lucas bamboo organic cotton items are oh so cozy. Whenever I see Kims daughter Addie in her kimono sleeper I really can't let her go.........she is so snuggly.
And for those wanting to begin on their children's summer wardrobes we have Sophie Catalou sundresses, skirts and sleeveless tops as well as Wonderboy and Ben Sherman for the boys....beautiful tees, long shorts and zippered long sleeves to cover up at the Beach!
